Bell Island's steep cliffs and flat plateau give the island a magestic presence in Conception Bay. Bell Island was initially selttled in the 1700's and provided a farming and fishing culture for the early European settlers. In the 1890's iron ore mining began near the community of Wabana. The iron ore mine provided the island with a booming economy. |

Wabana grew to become the island's largest community and the mine became one of the largest producers of iron ore in North America. The mine's workings extended beneath the seabed of Conception Bay, creating one of the most extensive submarine iron mines in the world. Mining continued until 1966. Today part of the original No 2. Mine is operated as a museum. |
